Personal. Social, Emotional Development |
Children are encouraged to make warm, stable relationships with other children and adults. By showing kindness and care, learning to take turns and sharing toys, they will develop the ability to work co-operatively and also acquire a good sense of self-awareness and self-confidence. We ensure that their needs are met and provide a challenging and exciting, yet nurturing environment inspired by children’s interests and needs to ensure that children learn, develop and thrive. It is essential that children’s needs are met to enable them to be a happy and confident learner. We believe it is essential that all of our children feel safe, secure and cared for and are celebrated for their unique qualities, experiences and cultures.

Literacy |
Promoting a literacy rich environment is vital in developing early reading skills and here at Reddish Vale we try in every way to immerse the children in print and text. We use Nursery rhymes regularly at Reddish Vale as they are a valuable way to introduce children to new vocabulary as well as building their attention skills as a way to anticipate what happens next. We promote reading through the large selection of different types of books and print the children are exposed to. Books are in all areas of the nursery and these are linked to the areas of the room to give context and be referred to. |

Communication and Language |
Play is the most important part of our day here at nursery and the interactions staff have with children are vital in promoting spoken language and building vocabulary. Group and story times are built into the day and these focus on using every opportunity for speaking and listening. Staff understand that the ability to listen well underpins all other learning. Key workers are able to promote good spoken language within these times and do this through songs, rhymes and stories . These times often focus on the development of new vocabulary linked to stories and staff encourage children to then use these in their play. |

Mathematics / Problem Solving / Reasoning / (Number and numerical Patterns) |
The children’s understanding of these basic concepts is key to them developing and progressing further through the subsequent stages of knowledge. We do this through practical rehearsal, pretend play, group times and conversation. All this is vital in children grasping a basic understanding of why number matters and making it relevant to them. Rather than moving children on more quickly to formal calculations and written algorithms, it is the underlying concepts of mathematical application that are the focus. |

Understanding the World
|
At Reddish vale Nursery we promote opportunities for children to make sense of the world around them, developing their cultural capital. We strongly believe in starting from the child and identifying each child’s unique experiences and interests. Each child experiences the world around them in a different way and it is our role to understand and build upon these experiences. We value outdoor learning and our high quality outdoor areas are accessible at all times. Nature school is a valued and integral part of the Nursery day. It takes place in a natural environment, separate to the continuous provision and is designed to promote children’s relationships with the natural world. Nature school promotes holistic development by fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners. Children are offered the opportunity to take supported risks, appropriate to the environment and themselves. |

Physical Development |
Opportunities for outdoor play are vital in the EYFS. Reddish Vale Nursery places equal value on outdoor and indoor play, and the well-resourced outdoor area is an important part of the continuous provision. We work on the premise that regular activity is vital for strengthening neural networks, where regular, intense exercise results in the growth of neurons to aid memory and learning. Opportunities in the outdoor area are designed to improve concentration, hand eye coordination, confidence and decision making. |
